The CIVA Board of Directors
The purpose of the Governing Board is to support CIVA as a charter public school dedicated to developing students' character first by:
- Preparing administrators, teachers, parents, mentors, and students to develop character within the school curriculum and larger learning environment;
- Providing and maintaining a school facility and infrastructure in which to carry out the school's mission;
- Managing research to assess the effectiveness of the school's educational progress.

Board Meeting Schedule

Governing Board Members
Karl Schneider President
Karl Schneider is a father of four lovely kids, Chambliss, McElvey, Liam and Sammy. He is a fan of education, very good education, especially for kids. They are our future and should be set up to be good citizens of our world as well as life-long learners.
Karl graduated Hampden-Sydney College with a BS in biology where he also participated in sports and choir. He earned his teaching licensure in Secondary Education biology from Longwood University. What followed was a 22 year career in the Army, traveling the world where he learned to speak both Turkish and French. He has also earned a Masters of Arts in Diplomacy and was selected as a fellow to MIT’s Seminar XXI. Karl served on the Board of Advisors at YMCA’s Camp Shady Brook as a treasurer and Vice Chairman for several years where he was able to give back to the community in different capacities.
Tom Sanny, PhD Vice President
Tom Sanny grew up in Colorado Springs and attended public schools in District 11. He is a graduate of Palmer High School and has a BA in English, an MA in Education, and a PhD in Communication. He taught in a middle school for a year before moving to a career in higher education teaching filmmaking at UCCS and Colorado College. He retired from teaching in 2008 but continues to serve as Treasurer of the University Film and Video Association, a national association of film professors, and is a trustee of the University Film and Video Foundation.

Dr. Richard Van Scotter Director Emeritus
Richard Van Scotter was a founder of CIVA and liaison with The Hyde School in Bath, Maine. His ideas are embedded in the foundation and mission of CIVA, and he served as board president for over a decade. Richard had been a high school teacher, college professor and lecturer on educational history and culture. He also is the author of several related books including Public Schooling in America and Social Foundations of Education. His latest is a novel titled: Thin Ice: Race, Sports, and Awakening in the 1950s. He is a former board member of Citizens Project in Colorado Springs and holds degrees from Beloit College (B.A), University of Wisconsin—Madison (M.A.), and the University of Colorado—Boulder (Ph.D.)
