This course is an introduction to the basics of all dance styles. Students will learn barre, center work, terminology, history and more.

 

 

BALLROOM DANCE
Course length: 2 Semesters Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

This class will introduce students to the elements of social dance and etiquette. Students will master the basics of the foxtrot, waltz, cha-cha, mambo and swing and they connect to current dance trends. Students will also have the opportunity to learn many dances in other cultural and historical settings.

BAND 1, 2
Course Length: 2 Semesters Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12

This course will have a primary focus on advanced techniques and styles in Jazz, Funk and other 20th century music. In order to take this class, students need to have taken have taken Beginning Band or have 2-3 years of experience on an instrument. The course is open to all concert band or orchestra instruments, with limited spots for amplified guitars and basses and drummers.

CONCERT CHOIR 1, 2

This is an introductory choral class designed to help those who have never taken a choir class or could use a refresher on how to sight-read music, or some help with developing healthy singing technique. We will cover a wide range of genres, from classical to contemporary.

CONCERT CHOIR ADVANCED 1, 2
Course Length: 2 Semesters Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit per Semester: 5.0 Prerequisite: Audition or teacher approval

This course is designed for singers with previous choral experience and established sight-singing skills. This ensemble will be encouraged to audition individually for honors choirs and will be a competitive choir. We will cover a wide range of genres, from classical to contemporary. Students interested in this advanced course need to be pre-approved by the music instructor.

DANCE 1

This unit will introduce the student to the basic concepts of dance. Through a variety of styles, the desired outcome will be improvement in strength, agility, balance, and endurance. Dance will continue to emphasize the acceptance of other cultures through an appreciation of dances unique to other countries.

DANCE 2

This course provides study for dance students who want to achieve more than Dance 1. Students will learn technique, composition, dance history and more. This course demands a high level of effort and commitment while encouraging enjoyment of creative expression.

DANCE 3

This course is for the serious dance student who is more advanced.

GUITAR 1, 2

Students interested in this course need have no experience in playing guitar or reading music. This course is designed to teach basic chords, note and rhythm reading, and techniques needed to play the guitar.

GUITAR 3, 4
Course Length: 1 Semester Grade: 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit per Semester: 3.0 Prerequisite: Guitar 1,2

This course is designed for students that have knowledge of note reading (beyond tablature) who are looking to learn more advanced pieces in both the classical and popular styles. This class is intended to prepare students for advanced band with jazz guitar as well as performing in a guitar ensemble and as a soloist.

INTERMEDIATE THEATRE
Course Length: 1 Semesters Grade 9, 10, 11, 12
Credit per Semester: 2.0 Prerequisite: Theatre or Teacher Approval

This course will combine acting, directing, design and technical production skills. Included in this course will be script analysis and performance, technical design in lighting, set, sound, props, costumes and basic directing skills. Students will be expected to produce a scene at the end of the semester.

PERCUSSION 1, 2

This course primarily focuses on techniques used for drumlines, using mostly marching percussion. The course covers the playing techniques for specific instruments, ensemble playing, rhythm reading and basic arranging/composing skills. The styles of music played range from traditional drum and bugle corps music to modern hip hop and rock. This course is open to all students regardless of previous percussion experience.

THEATRE

Introduction to Theatre is an introductory study of theatre arts. It will cover acting, stagecraft, theatre history, viewing and evaluating, review writing, etc. Activities include voice development, basic movement, pantomime, and improvisation, all of which culminate in scene performance.
